Losses

Energy loss in fluid motion is directly proportional to v2v^2 where vv is the velocity.

Types

Local loss

Occurs when there is a sudden change in flow.

KLv22gK_L \frac{v^2}{2g}

Here:

  • KLK_L - local loss coefficient
  • vv - velocity
  • gg - gravitational acceleration

Friction loss

Occurs because of

  • viscosity
  • friction between fluid and pipe wall

When the fluid is under turbulent flow:

λLDv22g\lambda \frac{L}{D} \frac{v^2}{2g}

Here:

  • λ\lambda - friction factor
  • LL - length of the pipe
  • DD - diameter of the pipe
  • vv - velocity
  • gg - gravitational acceleration
